A thermometer is a device that is used for measuring temperature. Thermometers are used to see if you have a fever or tell you how cold it is outside. One of the earliest inventors of a thermometer was probably Galileo. There are many types of thermometers in use today: the recording thermometer uses a pen on a rotating drum to continuously record temperature readings; the digital readout thermometers often coupled with other weather measuring devices; and the typical household types hung on a wall, post, or those used for medical purposes. typically one consisting of a narrow, hermetically sealed glass tube marked with graduations and having at one end a bulb containing mercury or alcohol that expands and contracts in the tube with heating and cooling.
Made up of thermo (heat) and meter (measuring device), the meaning of the word thermometer is pretty straightforward. We know him more for his studies about the solar system and his “revolutionary” theory (back then) that the earth and planets rotated around the sun. Thermometers measure temperatures in degrees, according to either the Celsius or Fahrenheit system. Galileo is said to have used a device called a “thermoscope” around 1600 – that’s 400 years ago!!

Features to Look in Microwave Oven

If you only need a microwave over for heating and defrosting, then you may probably need a standard basic microwave – a basic model for simple tasks like reheating coffee, cooking a ready-meal or defrosting chicken. A convection microwave uses a combination of the two technologies: a regular microwave and a convection oven. Absolutely. A basic microwave is a good option if you just want to complete simple heating tasks more quickly than is possible in a conventional gas or electric oven. But if you want something more advanced, you may find you’re better off with a microwave grill, which includes a heating element, or even a combi, which can heat, roast, crisps and brown just like a traditional oven.

It can be used to bake anything from cookies and cakes to quiches and pizzas. Look for ones with easy-to-read preprogrammed settings. But basic microwaves don’t brown food, so they’re unable to compete with ovens and cookers on jobs such as grilling or roasting meat. The dough goes through a strong kneading and rising process using steam, followed by an additional rising step. Unlike a regular or a solo microwave, a convection microwave lets the food cook through more crisper. They make preparing snacks like popcorn and soup a breeze. Microwaves generally have a power rating between 600 and 1,500 watts. With a baking process that is unique to the Superheated Steam Microwave Oven, it only takes approx. 90 minutes to bake a loaf of bread. (more…)

Vacuum Cleaners – Uses, Types and Buying Guide

The most important distinction between various vacuums is the weight. There are three categories most vacuums fall into: handheld, canister and upright.

  • Handheld vacuums are small and lightweight, making them great for quick cleanup and easy to move about the house. While modern models are powerful, cleaning up large areas with them can be tiresome.
  • Canister vacuums are slightly larger but still easy to lift and move about. These vacuums are generally used with hoses and attachments to clean larger areas than a handheld could.
  • Upright vacuums are the largest model, featuring a vertical vacuum mechanism on top of a rolling suction unit for vacuuming floors. These vacuums make cleaning entire rooms easy and quick, but are harder to lift and move about. Most upright vacuums offer an additional hose and attachment system so that you can leave the vacuum in place while cleaning hard to reach areas. You can check out some best upright vacuum cleaners here.

Choosing The Right Category of Vacuums to Meet Your Need

When choosing the best vacuum for you, first consider which of these categories would suit your home best. In a small or medium apartment with a pet that only sheds lightly, consider living with just a canister vacuum. In a larger apartment with a simple layout, you can likely make do with just an upright vacuum.
Canister Vacuum Cleaner
Generally supplied with a range of tools, wet and dry cleaners have relatively large capacities and can be bagged or bag-less. With so many different styles of vacuum cleaners available, it’s easy to waste money on a model that isn’t right for you. So in this handy buyer’s guide we aim to make things as simple as possible, identifying the different types and styles on offer, highlighting some of the things to look out for, and answering some of the most common vacuum cleaner FAQs. If you find yourself replacing a decades-old vacuum, you might find that today’s vacuums sound like they’re less powerful than the vacuums of old. However, thanks to their hard working motors, these innovative cleaners can be a little on the noisy side.

To avoid this happening, we’ve produced this guide to take you through the options available. Hoover is synonymous with vacuum cleaning around the world. This is because the manufacturing or importing of vacuum cleaners above 1,600 watts was banned within the European Union since September 2014. We’ve also got several tips on what you can do in the shops to make sure you buy the right vacuum. As the first vacuum cleaner manufacturer we have over a century of experience. Fear not, though, today’s vacuums don’t necessarily have less suction power. Bagged cylinders tend to have a larger capacity, collecting dust and dirt in a bag, which should be disposed of when full and replaced. Today our extensive range of appliances are innovatively deigned to keep you home spotless clean, including upright vacuum cleaners, cylinder vacuum cleaners, cordless stick vacuums, corded and cordless handhelds, mattress vacuums and advanced wifi enabled robot cleaners.

If anything, energy efficiency and performance are ever improving. Some bags seal the dust away for cleaner disposal whilst some bagless cylinders use powerful cyclone technology to remove bacteria and allergens from the airflow and trap dirt in a chamber. These models are better for asthmas and allergy sufferers. Bagless cylinders are cost effective and kinder to the environment, as you don’t have to replace bags which reduce the suction power as the bag fills. Finally, in a full sized home with plenty of hard to reach areas you’ll likely want a handheld vacuum to complement your upright model so you don’t have to move the vacuum across the whole house just to clean a small section of couch.

Bagless Pet Vacuum Cleaners

The Dyson DC41
Dyson Vacuum Cleaner in India
The Ferrari of pet vacuums, the Dyson DC41 Animal and Animal Complete are upright models designed specifically for pet owners. Featuring space age bagless technology, the DC41 works by sucking up gunk with a powerful motor and using centrifugal force to spin it neatly into the collection chamber. It isn’t cracked, the plastic is just weak. If I try to pick it up using the handle on the canister (yes, that is the lifting handle for the unit as well, just ask Dyson if you don’t believe me) the canister will pop out. Add to that, for some reason it became impossible to push on the hardwood floors. The DC41 features numerous attachments, a 5 year warranty and a revolutionary new ball system that allows it to maneuver spryly around your home with the lightest of touches. While it’s a bit pricey, it’s probably the best vacuum for dog hair at the moment.

The Hoover WindTunnel
vacuum cleaner 2016
The Hoover WindTunnel T-Series Pet Rewind Bagless Upright is another bagless phenomenon designed with your pet in mind. While the Dyson emphasizes innovative features, the T-Series is built with your convenience in mind. I hated the discharge smell from my old vacuum cleaner eventhough I change the bag every single time and I questioned how well it was picking up the pet hair. I did a little internet research, checked with various women folk and concluded I needed a Dyson bagless. Until I priced one. So back to the internet and Consumers Report. And – this model came up as pretty good and not too much money.

Featuring a power cord that automatically rewinds, specialized pet cleanup tools and a folding handle for easy storage, the T-Series is powerful and easy to use. It’s not quite as lithe or svelte as the Dyson, and the warranty is 2 years versus the DC41′s 5, but it’s also almost a quarter of the cost.

Handheld Vacuum Cleaners

The BISSELL Pet Hair Eraser
As far as handheld vacuums go, the BISSELL Pet Hair Eraser 33A1 is the best lightweight vacuum we tried. The Eraser comes with two specialized nozzles that allow you to create a flexible seal on upholstery or maintain a firm touch on harder surfaces.

The Eraser is especially easy to use, featuring an excellently placed grip handle and plenty of cord for cleaning away from outlets. It features a powerful motor and a HEPA filter to keep allergens trapped inside the vacuum instead of floating about in your home.

Canister Vacuum Cleaners

Eureka 3670G Mighty Mite

The best canister vacuum we found was the Eureka 3670G Mighty Mite. Inexpensive, light and powerful, the Mighty Mite comes equipped with a 12 amp motor, 20 foot cord and multiple on-board tools for cleaning furniture, upholstery and crevices.

Between the cord and the extension hose and tools, we were able to clean entire rooms without changing plugs easily. It is a bagged model, unlike many of the other vacuums we recommend, so be sure to factor replacement bags and filters into the cost of purchasing your vacuum.

Do Your Research to Find What Meets Your Needs Best

While all of these vacuums were designed with pets in mind, don’t rule other vacuums out from your search! Specialized pet vacuums offer advantages in filtering allergens and come with specialized cleaning tools, but for many homes a powerful ‘normal’ vacuum will perform a more than adequate job.

Consider trying a standard upright in conjunction with a specialized handheld vacuum, for example. Each pet and home is unique, making the best solution for your vacuuming needs very different from what Dyson or Hoover might design their pet vacuums for. By not ruling out any options, you’ll be more likely to choose the best pet hair vacuum cleaner for you.

A power bank recharges via USB, so you can continually use it to power up your mobile devices. I for one have often found myself seeing how I could stretch the last sliver of battery life out of my 1% by employing all sorts of brightness reducing and EDGE enabling tactics.

Selfie Stick

Selfie Stick Uses
The most common way to use a selfie stick is to take your smartphone, then slide it into place or mount it on the end of the selfie stick as instructed by the stick manufacturer, and connect it via Bluetooth or 3.5mm jack. First, selfie sticks are not all that new—they have been around in some form since the 1990s and are basically an inverted monopod with a handle. The reason why you’d want a selfie stick instead of just using your arm is that the stick can extend to a greater distance. They’re inexpensive versions of what was once called a monopod (i.e. a tripod minus two legs), which experienced photographers use to steady their cameras. From there, extend the selfie stick’s rod and then use the camera button built into the stick’s handle or fob in order to remotely capture photos and videos.
But with the growth of the smartphone camera and the apparent need to document all that we do, the selfie stick has become a common sight throughout the photo-taking world. This avoids the “head filling the shot” look, and it gives you more control of how much of the background makes it into your image. The difference with selfie sticks is that they’re specifically designed to be held at arm’s length to fit the photographer into the frame, and they usually—but don’t always—come with a mechanism to remotely trigger the shutter. And truthfully, selfie sticks don’t have to be “all about you;” they are practical tools to be used for high- or low-angle shooting and can double as monopods or even hiking sticks. There’s also composition to consider: An extended arm will be visible in a selfie, but a properly positioned selfie stick won’t.
With a little bit of practice, you can get the kinds of shots that might otherwise require you to hand your phone off to a stranger.

Creative Visualization – Trying Something Different

Creative Visualization is the title of a wonderful little book by Shakti Gawain. I was in the bookstore today putting in some time while my daughter was getting her hair cut and I saw a copy of the book down low on a shelf in the self improvement section; a section which I haunt regularly. It was a hardcover version in a special box. I picked it up and on the cover it read, Thirty Year Anniversary Edition! I was taken a-back. Has this book been around for thirty years? I first read it in 1988, it was already ten years old then, I remember that year, it was my last year in university. This little book was one of those books that helped to start me on my lifelong journey of self discovery? I was feeling very old now.

I am certain that this book finding me was one of those serendipitous moments when life jumps out in front of you; when timing aligns with your readiness to receive, and you are given a lead to follow. I was going to purchase Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, I had given my copy away long ago, and was searching for some of Carlos Casteneda’s books; guess I was feeling nostalgic. I put those books down and hurried excitedly out of the store and back to the hair salon. I settled into a chair and read a good portion while I waited for my daughter. Who knew a teenager’s haircut could take so long!

The book couldn’t have come to me at a better time. I was feeling down after a tough day and was wondering if the time I spent blogging was worthwhile; was it helping anyone besides me, or was it just an outlet for me to deposit my thoughts, meaningful only to myself? As I read the words I could feel a warm spring breeze of peacefulness enter my mind, I could almost feel it on my brow as my whole body began to relax. I had the a strange sense of completion, a feeling that it was a time to move on. This was one of the first self-help /personal development books that I had ever read, and now I felt like it may be one of the last. Had I come Full circle? Maybe it’s time for me to act and maybe this blog is the beginning.

And guess what Shakti Gawain writes about in Creative Visualization? That’s right, ”the law of attraction.” She was writing about it thirty years ago! Personal development has been re-phrased and repackaged over and over again almost to the point of redundancy. Just go to the bookstore and notice how many books have the word ‘Secret’ on the cover; there are a lot! I fear that the movement is risking becoming a parody of itself.
